AIO - All in One diaper. This is a diaper that has inserts sewn in and is used like a disposable.
AI2 - All in Two. Similar to AIO but inserts snap in and out to make for faster drying time.
Aplix - Another name for velcro closure. Alternative to snaps.
Bamboo - A soft, absorbent material often used in inserts, fitteds, and hybrids. Safe against baby's skin.
Boosters - Adds extra absorbency in AIO and AI2
CBI - Charcoal Bamboo Inserts. Made of a dark gray bamboo on the outside, with 2-3 layers of microfiber on the inside. Very stain resistant. Can buy with or without gussets. Safe against baby's skin.
CD - Cloth diaper/ing/ed
Covers - A waterproof (with limits) diaper that goes over an absorbent layer such as a prefold, fitted, flat or insert. Not absorbent alone.
Diaper Sprayer - A spraying hose that connects to a toilet to spray off diaper solids.
Double Gussets - A second set of elastics often found on covers and occasionally pockets to help hold in solids. Great for breastfed babies.
Doublers - Used with inserts to increase absorbency. Either narrower or hourglass shaped. Doesn't add too much bulk to a diaper so it still fits properly.
EBF - Exclusively Breastfed
EO -Essential Oils
Fitted - A diaper made out of absorbent materials. Requires a cover.
Flats - A large piece of absorbent fabric that can be folded different ways. Usually Cotton or Bamboo. Quick drying time. Safe against baby's skin.
Fluff - Cloth diapers.
FST - Flour Sack Towel. A type of cotton flat. Very popular in the CD community because it can be bought locally at Walmarts or Targets and because of how absorbent it is. Safe against baby's skin.
HE - High Efficiency in reference to washing machines.
Hemp - A very absorbant, trim fabric. Can be a little rough if hang dried. Found in inserts and fitteds. Safe against baby's skin.
Hybrid Fitted - A wahm specialty. A fitted diaper with pretty prints and hidden PUL. Requires cover for long wear or can be worn without for a shorter time. Great for overnight.
Inserts - Absorbent, pad-shaped, layered fabric used to lay in covers or stuff in pockets.
Liners -
Fleece Liners - Usually made from cheap walmart blankets. Wicks moisture away from baby and creates a barrier. Perfect for unsafe diaper creams or to put on top of microfiber. Very economical so can be thrown away if there's poop.
Biodegradable Liners - Advertised as flushable, but most people simply throw away to protect plumbing pipes.
Viva paper towels - Cloth like paper towels used to create barrier.
MF - Microfiber inserts. Cannot be used directly against baby's skin. Can dry it out too much. Standard insert that comes with pocket diapers.
NB - Newborn. Usually in reference to diaper size. Typically for babies up to 13-15ish lbs.
OS - One size diapers. Fit babies 8-35+ lbs.
Pail liner - A waterproof diaper pail liner typically made of PUL. Used to hold dirty cloth diapers and then thrown in the wash with them.
Prefold - Also known as Trifolds. A flat that has been folded and sewn together. Folds in thirds.
Pocket Diaper - A diaper with a waterproof layer and a wicking layer, like microfleece, to keep babies skin dry. Not absorbent alone. Needs an insert. Any insert can be put in the pocket, or skin safe inserts can be laid in the diaper against baby's bum.
PUL - Polyurethane Laminate. A waterproof material used in diapers.
Rise Snaps - Several layers of snaps down the front of a diaper to adjust size. The reason one size diapers are possible.
Sized Diapers - Depending on brand, options include XS, S, M, L, and XL. Diapers come in size ranges like disposables. Some have adjustable elastics instead of rise snaps.
Snappi - The "new safety pin." A plastic T-shaped clip that holds flats and prefolds in place.
Snaps - Small, plastic, snapping buttons similar to what is used on baby jeans. Used in rise settings and an alternative closure to aplix.
Soaker - An absorbant insert for fitteds, AIO, and AI2.
Sposies - Disposable diapers.
Stripping - A method of removing minerals / hard water build up from diapers.
Trim - A word used to describe how thin a diaper is or how similar it is to a disposable.
WAHM/D - Work at home mom/dad. Homemade diapers.
Wet Bag - A zippered bag that is waterproof. Some are double zippered so you can keep clean, dry diapers in one pocket and wet dirty ones in another. Great for travel and to keep the smell out of places like cars, purses, and diaper bags and to make sure everything the bag comes in contact with stays dry.
Wicking Fabric - A fabric that keeps baby dry by pulling moisture away from one fabric and transferring it to another as seen in pocket diapers.
